In our earlier discussion on this subject we established the truth that your dream is you. That your dream is part of God’s master plan for the universe and you. He wired you with potentials to fulfil your dreams. The issue confronting us today is that quite a lot of us are loosing the sense of our callings, called dreams, in life.

Samson lost his dream with a carelsss lifestyle built on faulty character on the lap of Delilah.

Lets examine for now what happens to dreams?

It can be aborted. Dreams can be aborted ( early loss), when exposed to a harsh and unconducive enviroment (early loss)due to lack of nurturing.

It can suffer still-birth.  Dreams can survive for a while (Later- loss) in a harsh environment, after draining energy and resources available and dies later.

It can come too prematurely . Dreams like pregnancy can be delivered prematurely (too early). It is  dangerous. The environment may not be too conducive for survival. It may die if cares to preserve is not taking) (such babies are put in the intensive unit of a hospital to ensure the full development of the baby’s organs). Jesus told his mother my time has not come

It can be birthed. (Timely-  fully matured). The bible uses the word “in the fullness of time”to describe this.

Why do we settle for less other than for the fulfillment of our dream?

The Uncertainties and Pressures of life.  We settle for other things in life, other than the fulfillment of our dreams due to the uncertainties and pressures of life. Happenings in life are at a fast pace, and one seems not too close to catching on life and when one seems close to, it is often a mirage.

The pressures of life become so hard that our lives hang in a balance with nothing to hold on to. It is frustrating. So we settle for what we are accustomed to, follow the routines of every day and live by these. Here, life dreams are lost.

Fear: The greatest challenge to living out our dreams is Fear. The God-given dream of our hearts is usually bigger than our imagination. God intends that they are things that have not been seen, heard and neither come to our knowledge before. Fears often set in. We begin to question our dreams. We doubt our capacity to actualize our dreams.

The first issue God addresses whenever he calls a man with a divine assignment is on the issue of fear. He told, Abraham, ‘Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.’ Fear has a crippling effect on the actualization of a man’s dream in life.

Focusing on other things. We lose our dreams when we focus on other things in life. These things get our attention usually because they are trending, and economically viable. Following the principle of 80/20  we focus more on things that we should minor on. This accounts for why we are far from the realization of our dreams.

Failure to cherish and celebrate your dream. The key to divine uplifting and fulfilled dreams is being thankful and appreciative of what you have. It put you in the right attitude for a greater altitude in life. Those who complain and murmur in life, like the children of Israelites never got the land of their dream.  They died in the wilderness of life.

The opinion of others. We allow others to talk us out of our dreams by their opinion and suggestion.

Failures of the Past : Failures at certain undertakes may lead to discouragement and abandonment of dreams. The fact that you failed in certain undertakes is not enough reason to abandon your life dream.

The expectation of others. Men and women often jettison their life dream for another based on the expectation of others. I have read a story of a young brilliant guy that graduated with distinction from a Medical College. On the day of graduation, he told his parents that haven fulfilled their expectation of becoming a doctor; he was now willing to pursue his life dream career in music.

In our last discourse we looked at the meaning of Amittai, the name of the father of Jonah. The name means “my truth or the truth of the Lord”. God is truth personified hence His children should be sons of truth.

Today, we will look at the specific nature of the call of God in the life of Jonah and how that impacts on our lives.
Prophet Jonah narrated how he was called of God “Now the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, Arise go to Nineveh that great city, and cry against it, for their wickedness is come up before me”. Jonah 1:3

God has a will. The eternal will of God is His heart beat. His will is that which matters most to Him. The execution of His will brings Him pleasure. He does not need man’s counsel  to decide what to do. He however needs the instrumentality of man to fulfil His purpose on earth. We are not here by accident; we are here to execute His purpose.

The God’s call is an invitation to man to take part in the fulfilment of God’s eternal plan and purpose for humanity and the earth. It is important to stress that as creatures and not creator, the true meaning of our lives comes from obedience to the call of God upon our lives.

It is important to know that just as in an orchestra we are differently talented or gifted to produce a harmonious and melodious song.  It is therefore important for us to identify our gifts and stay within the area of our calling.
It is the pursuit of purpose that gives meaning to life. We start to live when we gain understanding of our purpose in life.
One ingredient of God’s call is that it is specific. In the book of Jonah, God leaves no one in doubt as to who He was calling, Jonah of course and for what cause?, “to go to Nineveh that great city and cry against it” and why? “for their wickedness is come up before me”.

Jonah, the writer of this book, as if trying to convince his audience wrote down the exact word of his call, which today we call the Mission.

What is your sense of mission on earth? Take a pen and write it or them down.

The secret of a successful and most fulfilling life lies in the answer to this question.

“But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord” (Jonah 1:3)

In our previous discussion, we emphasized the fact that God called Jonah with a specific assignment to preach to the people of Nineveh. As far as God was concerned,  Jonah was qualified for this assignment. Our call in life is to show forth the light of God in us in darkness. Primarily, we called and chosen, like Jonah to share God’s truth to modern cities of Nineveh around us. Jonah would however not go, he declined such a mission.

Instead of heading to the great city of Nineveh, which at that time was the capital of Assyrian Kingdom. Jonah left his home at Gath-Hepher, near Nazareth in Israel (2kings 14:25), headed for Joppa, a coastal city where he boarded a ship bound for Tarshish, a city near Gilbraltar in Southern Spain.

We are told he headed for Tarshish, accordingly to go from the presence of the Lord. This move by Jonah was resisted by the all-knowing and Omnipresent God.

It is impossible for His children to escape His sight. King David said “whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into the heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there……if I say, surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee. (Psalm 139:7-12)

Am so sure that we are all familiar with the story of Jonah in the bible.  There have been occasions when God had asked you and I to do certain things, and we abandon them to pursue our own desires. In such moment doing God’s will is second to all other considerations. Sometimes we make other sacrifices other than the sacrifice that God demanded from us and still expect the best of God.

The Psalmist elsewhere says “ Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required. Then said I, Lo I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me, I delight to do thy will, O my God: (Psalm 40:6-8).

The secret to a fulfilling life is staying in one’s calling or purpose, don’t jump ships. We put our lives and that of others at risk when we do- “ And they said everyone to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah” (Jonah 1:7). Don’t jump ships, don’t alternate, stop running pillars to poles. God created you uniquely for your assignment or purpose in life.

Memory verse: “Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called” (I Corinthians 7:20).

Prayer: I pray that the Lord will enlighten my eyes of understanding, that I may know the hope of my calling in Christ Jesus. (Ephesians 1:18).

He stood before a teeming large crowd and said, “Today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth”.

The most important reason why reference is being made to Lou Gehrig’s word is that they speak of gratitude in the heart of the one we think would have every reason to be bitter.

It is hard to believe that a man like Lou Gehrig in his difficult moment will still consider himself the luckiest man on earth and will not ask, why me?. It takes a man of great character to be able to say this. John Ortberg, said in his book “When the Game is Over It All goes Back in the Box”, “that the great secret joy of life –the joy that we think getting richer will bring us – is the ecstasy of gratitude. Gratitude is how those rich toward God, rich in being, not just in having – play the game.

Lou Gehrig was grateful to those who made his job a success, these were men and women who have been unnoticed for many years. We truly need to be grateful for our state in life. Let your heart be full of gratitude for every step you have taken in life. Cherish the love of God, the great father who kept up you till this moment, be also grateful to cheerers who kept you going. There is more that we are, to be grateful for in life, than what we don’t have.

I am so very proud of you. Now, as you embark on a new journey, I’d like to share this one piece of advice. Always, always remember that adversity is not a detour. it is part of the path.

You will encounter obstacles. You will make mistakes. Be grateful for both. Your obstacles and mistakes will be your greatest teachers. And the only way to not make mistakes in this life is to do nothing, which is the biggest mistake of all.

Your challenge, if you let them, will become your greatest allies. Mountains can crush or raise you, depending on which side of the mountain you choose to stand on. And, more times than not it’s precisely those challenges that, in God’s time, lead to triumph.

The Cracked Pot

A water Bearer in India had two large pots, each hung on each end of a pole, which he carried across his neck. One had a crack in it while the other was perfect. After two years of its perceived bitter failure, it spoke to the bearer one day on the way to the stream.

“I am ashamed of myself and I want to apologize to you”, the pot said, “why, what are you ashamed of?” asked the bearer. it said, “I have been able, for these past two years, to deliver only half my load because this crack on my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your master’s house . Because of my flaw, you have had to do all this work and you don’t get full value for your efforts”.

The bearer said the pot should notice the beautiful flowers along the path to the house.”Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of the path? That’s because I have always known your flaws and I took advantage of it. I planted flower seeds on your side and every day we passed, you’ve wanted them. For two years, I have been able to pick beautiful flowers to decorate my master’s table. Without you being the way you are, he would not have this beauty to grace his house”.

Each of us has our own unique flaws. We’re all cracked pots. But if we allow it, the Lord will use our flaws to grace His father’s table. In God’s great ceremony, nothing goes to waste.

So, as we seek ways to minister together, and as God calls you to the tasks He has appointed for you, don’t be afraid of your flaws. Acknowledge them, allow Him to take advantage of them and you too can be the cause of beauty in His pathway. Go out boldly, knowing that in our weakness, we find His strength and that “In Him, every one of God’s promises is a “Yes”.

Our discourse continues on the major ingredient of the call of God, taking our lessons from the life of Jonah.

The call of God is a summon or an invitation to man to partner with Him in the execution of His purpose and counsel on earth. The scriptures are loaded with incidents where God interrupt someone’s life to make a demand on him to do one thing or the other. Usually the tasks are not easy task. Jonah was summoned by God to go to Nineveh, a great city, full of wickedness. It is like asking a man to leave his remote village or small town and move to a mega city, like New York or Lagos. One is likely to develop a cold feet for such an assignment to a strange terrain where much evil is reported.

One entire book in the bible, Hebrews 11, is devoted to a series of encounters where God asks people to embrace high-risk assignments. God asks Noah to build an ark in the face of ridicule, Abraham to leave everything familiar and then to become a father at the age of ninety-nine, Joseph to be faithful in the face of slavery and imprisonment, and Moses to defy Pharaoh. Jonah as well is confronted with a no easy assignment. 

No matter how daunting the assignment may be, God wants you to plunge into it with a heart of faith, because “faithful is He that has called you, who also will do it”.

The road may be rough and scary; God is moved by faith not fear. He will see you through. Hear what George Muller says, “Faith does not operate in the realm of the possible. There is no glory for God in that which is humanly possible”

God’s call is a summon to higher realm of possibilities. Faith begins where man’s power ends. It is important for us to realize that the call of God is not limited to the pulpit or evangelical ministry, but to all aspect of human endeavours to which God has called you into.

EMPOWERED TO PLEASE GOD

Now the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the son of Amittal, sayings, Arise go to Nineveh that great city, and cry against it, for their wickedness is come up before me.(Jonah 1:1)

In our last discourse we emphasized the need to have the word of God to live by. I emphatically stated that it is the word of God that inspires a man towards the discovery of his purpose in life.

Let’s take another step further to look at the meaning of the name, Jonah or yonah (in Hebrew). For a meaning of the name Jonah, all consulted sources go with the word, Dove, but it also means Vexer, someone who does wrong, a wrongdoer.

The two words are symbolical and come with a message for today.

As children of God we do wrong things, sometimes we make God angry and even make others too. Sometimes in this state, we are convinced that we do not deserve God’s love and mercies. On occasions when we judge ourselves fair, we soon realize that before him “our righteousness is like filthy garments”. Despite all of these, His mercies abides still. He saved us from our sins and pours His grace upon us. We certainly need to quit doing wrong.

In the Old Testament the dove represent a symbol of purification. According to the Law of Moses those who cannot afford a lamb were allowed to offer two doves for purification. (Lev.5:7). The dove is the symbol of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament. It is the symbol of empowerment to do the impossible.

God no doubt catches on our weaknesses to bring out the best in us by bringing us to the saving knowledge of the truth, through a deep conviction by the Holy Spirit.

The greatest pursuit of every child of God is to please the father, the Holy Spirit (the dove) is given to help our human frailty, so that we become well pleasing to God.

The Lord Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy resident in Him, made pleasing His heavenly father the object of His focus. He said” And he that sent me is with me: the father hath not left me alone ; for I do those things that always please Him”. (John 8:29)

When we make God the object of our love and submit to the power of the Holy Spirit inside of us we will truly leave to please Him. Then we can certainly be sure that the world will come under our feet. Joshua made a choice when he said “as for me and my house we will serve the lord.(Joshua 24:15b)

Prayer: Let my life be a full expression of your grace.

We are Sons of the Truth

Now the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying: “Arise go to Nineveh that great city, and cry against it, for their wickedness is come up before me”.

Amittai, the name of the father of Prophet Jonah comes under our focus today.

The name Amittai in Hebrew means “my truth or the truth of the Lord”.

God is truth personified.

The bible testifies that, “He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all His ways are judgement: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is He”. (Deut.32:4)

It further confirms that “the truthful lip shall be established forever. But a lying tongue is but for a moment” (Proverb 12:19).

God’s call to Jonah and to all His children is to the truth. Jonah is well acquainted with the word of God – the truth, for God’s servant should be sons of truth. Jonah knew the voice of the Lord from that of a stranger.

The general opinion is that everyone has his own truth, but truth outside of God is no truth. Men’s words are but wind, but God’s words are substance. We become like Him as we grow in His word. Our ultimate aim is to be like Him.

Truth is soul’s freedom from modern age of deception. Our Lord Jesus said “And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free” (John 8:32). As children of God we are not expected to be caught in the web of deception of this age but to reprove it, by speaking “the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15a).

We are called to go into the world to share God’s gospel of truth. (Mark 16:15) It is a mandate to His children of truth to help deliver the world from the lies and deceptions of Satan.

We are called primarily, like Jonah to share God’s truth to modern cities of Nineveh around us.

Today, as you step out remember you are called to the truth. Trust the Holy Spirit to lead you into all truth.

Memory Verse: But he that doeth truth cometh to light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God (John 3:21)

Prayer: I pray that the Holy Spirit will continually lead me into all truth.

WHO IS IN CONTROL?

Top of the day, fellow Pilgrims. I pray that God will order your steps. May your life overflow with His goodness.

My question to you this morning is,” Who is in control?” As simple as this question may appear to be, we all need a great deal of time to pause and answer it. I am sure of varied answers from my readers and reasons for this are not farfetched. The answers from individuals are a reflection of how we see and live our lives.

For the purpose of this write up, it is an illusion for anyone to feel that man is in control. These feeling of being in control or being in charge are usually is usually very strong that we hardly consult either with the word of God or pray to get direction from God. We often take journeys in life, unmindful of what God is saying or what He wants done. This may sound an extremist idea to some, but let’s see what the word of God has to say on this.

The writer in the book of Proverb 19 verse 21 says that “there are many plans in a man’s heart, nevertheless the Lord’s counsel- that will stand. Here we see in contrast to the will of man, the supreme authority of God over all things. His sovereignty in display cannot be questioned. It is a hard for anyone to kick against the determinate will, purpose or counsel of God and succeed in life.

These feelings of being control is very strong when there is a measure of success in life, shoulders suddenly go high. With the measure of success in life, men are tempted to say “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me”( Deut.8:17). Our attitude and disposition to others in life often reveals this in us, even though we may not say it by words of mouth.

In the word of Ernest Becker, ” man will use the power of money, or a string of sexual conquests, or relationship with important people, or a prestigious job, or his ability to learn , to make him feel that “he controls his life and death”

In reality we are fundamentally dishonest if this is our feeling. We are not in control, God is in control. We owe our lives to Him. He can kill and make alive, there is none beside Him” (Deut.32:39)

On the verge of entering into the Promised Land, Moses warned the children of Israel against these feeling of being in control. He said to them “But remember the Lord your God it is He who gives you ability to produce wealth”(Deut.8:18)

Your life is like a gift to you, it does not belong to you –it belongs to God. We need to take our lives back to Him and lay it at His feet and let Him be in control. We must be willing to surrender all to Him. We must allow God mastery over our lives.

We need to surrender and give Him control over our lives because God is good. Surrendering to God opens us to God’s blessing.

You are a creature and not the creator.
